Long-awaited highway finally on track with €330 million price tag

Completion set for 2030-2032 after decades of delays; ambitious four-lane upgrade and Latchi port expansion aim to transform the region’s infrastructure and economy.

Newsroom

The long-delayed Polis Chrysochous-Paphos highway project, now estimated to cost a staggering €330 million, is finally moving forward with a completion target set for 2030-2032. Transport Minister Alexis Vafeadis provided updates during a meeting with local officials, emphasizing the government’s commitment to infrastructure that fosters regional development and connectivity. The project, initially conceived as a two-lane road, has evolved into a full four-lane highway, reflecting its importance as a key transport link in Cyprus.

Decades-Long Wait for the Highway

The Polis-Paphos highway has been under discussion for years, but tangible progress has been slow. The project is now set to be built in phases, with the first section (Agia Marinouda to Stroumbi) expected to begin construction this year after a tender is awarded by September. This phase, spanning 15.5 km, is estimated to cost €96 million plus VAT and will take three years to complete. The second section, from Stroumbi to Polis Chrysochous, will follow, with tenders planned for 2026 and completion projected for 2031.

Rising Costs and Expanded Scope

The decision to upgrade the highway to four lanes has significantly increased costs. The first section’s construction, in its final four-lane form, will cost approximately €129 million plus VAT, compared to €60 million for just two lanes. The second section, including additional lanes, is estimated at €75 million plus VAT, with a combined cost of all phases reaching €330 million.

Broader Regional Development

The highway project also includes connections to Mesogi and Marathounta, enhancing accessibility for local communities and visitors. The government views these infrastructure investments as a way to stimulate economic growth, reduce urban sprawl, and provide long-term benefits for the area’s residents.

Port Expansion in Latchi

Alongside the highway, plans for a €50 million expansion of the Latchi port were also outlined. This project aims to modernize marine and land facilities, creating 160 new boat moorings, expanded docks, and recreational spaces. The port will feature improved maintenance services, fueling stations, and commercial amenities like restaurants and offices. Scheduled for completion by 2028, the port expansion is expected to boost local tourism and the regional economy.

A Step Toward Progress

While the highway’s completion may be nearly a decade away, the long-awaited progress offers hope to residents and businesses in the region. By prioritizing key infrastructure projects like the Polis-Paphos highway and the Latchi port, the government aims to unlock the area’s development potential, providing a foundation for future growth.
