A 36-year-old man was arrested Wednesday after police discovered the butchered remains of a kangaroo in a residential parking area in the Famagusta district, authorities said.
Police were responding to a tip-off that two individuals were seen cutting up an animal with knives in the parking lot of an apartment complex. Officers from the Deryneia police station arrived at the scene, where one suspect fled and the second remained on site.
During a search, officers found plastic bags containing the remains of a butchered animal, a hatchet, and five knives. The man told investigators the animal was a kangaroo and claimed he had received it from another person in the Paralimni area.
A veterinary services official later confirmed the remains were those of an adult kangaroo. The carcass was seized for further examination.
Authorities also determined the man was residing in the Republic of Cyprus illegally. His asylum application had been rejected in 2022, police said.
A court warrant was issued for his arrest. He is being held to assist with the investigation, which is ongoing.
