Mass mourning begins in Iran following death of former supreme leader

Millions expected to attend multi-day funeral route across Iran and Iraq.

Iran has entered an extended period of national mourning and public processions for its former Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The events take place more than four months after his death in late February during joint military strikes conducted by the United States and Israel.

The assassination of the Supreme Leader triggered a major conflict across the region. However, the current memorial events coincide with a fragile ceasefire currently observed by Iran and the US, established through a preliminary agreement to suspend hostilities.

Extensive Memorial Route and Capital Lockdowns
The multi-day commemoration, which domestic officials are calling the "funeral of the century," is expected to draw between 12 and 20 million attendees. As illustrated in the map file image_9d3e29.jpg, the formal itinerary spans several distinct geographic stages across Iran and neighboring Iraq over a seven-day period:

Tehran (3–6 July): The late Ayatollah’s casket, draped in the national flag, was brought to the capital's Grand Mosalla on Friday. It will remain on an elevated platform for public viewing over several days alongside the remains of family members who also perished in the February bombardment. Tehran authorities have shut down private and public offices from Saturday to Monday, closed central roads to private vehicles, and scheduled a full closure of local airspace for Monday.

Qom (7 July): On Tuesday, the cortege travels south to the highly symbolic Jamkaran mosque, where a senior Shia cleric will lead funeral prayers.

Najaf and Karbala, Iraq (8 July): The casket will be transported across the border to Iraq on Wednesday. Following a procession at the shrine of Imam Ali in Najaf, ceremonies are scheduled to proceed through Karbala. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi visited Baghdad to organize these events, which officials state were requested by Iraqi organizations.

Mashhad (9 July): Final rites and the official burial will take place on Thursday at the Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad, the Ayatollah's birthplace and one of the most prominent pilgrimage locations in Iran.

National commemorative events are expected to persist for 40 days, with structured memorial activities continuing until the first anniversary of the interment.

International Attendance and Geopolitical Friction
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian joined numerous foreign dignitaries to pay respects at the Tehran complex. High-profile attendees included Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, whose administration has served as a mediator for peace negotiations between Washington and Tehran. Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Afghan Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi also attended, alongside state delegations from Armenia, Turkey, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Oman.

Concurrently, US President Donald Trump addressed the situation during a speech at Mount Rushmore on the eve of Independence Day celebrations. Trump remarked that Washington granted Iran "a week off for a funeral" as diplomatic discussions aimed at concluding the war persist, claiming that the Iranian government is highly motivated to reach a final settlement.

Unresolved Leadership Transitions
As the Mohammad Rasulullah Corps oversees the complex logistical layout in Tehran, significant political questions persist inside the Islamic Republic. Khamenei has been succeeded by his son, Mojtaba, who has remained entirely out of the public eye since assuming the role of supreme leader.

Organizing committee secretary Ali Akbar Pourjamshidian stated that any announcement regarding whether Mojtaba will appear at the funeral will come directly from the armed forces and the supreme leader's office. Additionally, officials have yet to confirm who will guide the final funeral prayers, an assignment that carries immense religious and political weight within Shia tradition.
