Net metering applications open through year-end, Energy Minister says

Home solar owners can keep selling extra power until year-end.

Applications for Cyprus’ net metering program for rooftop solar panels will be accepted until the end of the year, Energy Minister George Papanastasiou told CNA.

Under net metering, homeowners and businesses with solar panels can feed extra electricity they don’t use back into the grid. Starting this year, a new system called net billing will gradually replace net metering for new solar installations. With net billing, surplus electricity is sold to the Electricity Authority of Cyprus at a set price, instead of just offsetting the household’s energy bill.

The minister noted that most EU countries have already ended net metering. Cyprus had planned to stop it on Aug. 1, but after public requests, the government extended it first to Oct. 1 and now until the end of the year. Existing participants can stay in net metering until their contracts expire, or switch to net billing if it’s more financially beneficial.

The Renewable Energy and Energy Saving Fund will also continue accepting applications for solar subsidies until Dec. 31, 2025.

Progress reports due for Vasilikos LNG terminal
Papanastasiou also gave an update on the liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal project in Vasilikos. Two key progress reports have already been submitted to the Natural Gas Infrastructure Company (ETYFA), and a third, an engineering review, is expected soon. A fourth report, reviewing installed or purchased materials, is expected in about two months.

The flow of reports began in late August, and the minister said they are helping ETYFA plan the next steps for the project.
