Nicosia’s aspirations to become a vibrant hub for tourism and investment were showcased at the Annual General Meeting of the Nicosia Region Tourism Development and Promotion Company (ETAP), held yesterday at the Old Town Hall.
The President of Nicosia ETAP, Mr. Theodoros Kringos, emphasized tourism’s vital role in driving the city’s social and economic growth. He called on the Deputy Ministry of Tourism to introduce initiatives that position Nicosia as a premier city-break destination. Mr. Kringos highlighted the city’s potential as a meeting point for partners from three continents, promoting collaboration and coexistence.
He also underscored the importance of business tourism, citing the city's new boutique hotels and modern digital infrastructure as assets. ETAP is currently evaluating government initiatives, including incentives for attracting digital nomads. Additionally, Mr. Kringos noted Nicosia’s recognition as the second-best European destination for Erasmus students in 2023, describing educational tourism as a cornerstone of future growth.
To strengthen cultural tourism, ETAP recommended drafting a targeted promotional strategy with additional funding. It also proposed creating an interdepartmental committee, including the Deputy Ministries of Tourism and Culture, the Department of Antiquities, and ETAP, to develop a strategic marketing plan for the upcoming Cyprus Museum.
Regarding event tourism, the "Festivisation" strategy was highlighted as a crucial factor for boosting tourism and supporting major infrastructure projects. Mr. Kringos called for collective support in anticipation of Nicosia’s bid for European Capital of Culture 2030.
The ETAP President also emphasized the urgent need for a new conference center to enhance Nicosia’s appeal for business tourism.
In terms of enhancing the tourism experience, the ETAP is exploring various projects, including installing water refill stations, creating innovative photo points, introducing electric carts for improved accessibility, and developing digital tour tools.
“The vision is to transform Nicosia into a smart, accessible, and vibrant city with a focus on people, the environment, and culture,” Mr. Kringos said.
Deputy Minister of Tourism Costas Koumi echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of promoting rural tourism. He highlighted the unique appeal of areas such as Tamassos-Machaira and Kato Pyrgos Tylliria, which can attract niche tourism markets. He also discussed the Ministry’s Grant Scheme for reviving rural areas through authentic experiences, noting its success in supporting local communities.
During the assembly, Mr. Kringos accepted the award for “Best Beverage Experience for Culinary Travellers” for 2024 from the World Food Travel Association. Nicosia is the first European capital to earn this distinction. Additionally, the Culinary Capital certification for 2024 was presented to Mayor Haralambos Prudzos, recognizing efforts to promote the city’s gastronomic offerings under the "Taste Nicosia" campaign.
