According to the Fire Department, their crews dealt with a range of problems, including fallen trees, flooded basements, blocked rainwater drains, water in elevator shafts, a vehicle tow, and sparking cables.
The breakdown of incidents shows nine cases in Nicosia, four in Limassol, seven in Paphos, and seven in Famagusta. Fire Service spokesperson Koulla Mesaritou highlighted one notable incident: water had to be pumped out of the elevator shaft at Paphos General Hospital. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.
The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) also faced minor weather-related disruptions. Spokesperson Christina Papadopoulou told the Cyprus News Agency that medium-voltage issues were reported in Sotira, Frenaros, and Ayia Napa.
Papadopoulou explained that most issues were due to wear and tear on equipment, which is worsened by fluctuating temperatures. While these problems were resolved quickly, she advised consumers to unplug sensitive devices like televisions and computers during periods of intense lightning activity.
EAC crews remain on high alert, ready to respond to any new issues. Papadopoulou also confirmed that the project to move cables underground is progressing steadily, a step expected to reduce weather-related disruptions in the future.
