No talks on normalization between Israel and Lebanon, despite Trump admin claims

Lebanon denies claims of direct negotiations, warning that Israel's statements may harm chances for resolving border disputes.

There are no ongoing discussions about normalization between Israel and Lebanon, according to sources familiar with the matter. This comes after a statement by an Israeli political official suggesting that talks with Lebanon on the land border were part of a larger plan for normalization. The Trump administration recently announced that it had helped broker an agreement for Israel and Lebanon to address 13 disputed border points, including five fixed points where Israel has operations in southern Lebanon.

An Israeli official emphasized that both Lebanon and Israel have territorial claims, and these matters would be part of future discussions. However, sources clarified that it could take weeks before the talks begin, and it is uncertain whether any agreements will be reached.

Lebanese President’s office denied claims that these talks would lead to normalization, stating that the working groups are simply part of implementing UN Resolution 1701 and not direct negotiations with Israel. The office also dismissed claims that these discussions were a step toward a peace agreement.

Critics argue that Israel's remarks about normalization could undermine the progress of the border talks, as such statements may fuel political opposition in Lebanon, making it harder to reach an agreement.
