Cyprus’ higher education watchdog has asked Paphos Mayor Phedon Phedonos to formally identify the universities he accused of “selling degrees” during an online discussion with Fidias Panayiotou.
The Quality Assurance and Accreditation Agency for Higher Education (DI.P.A.E.) said it will examine the cases cited by the mayor, whether or not he submits a formal complaint. The agency said it will repeat inspections and audits of institutions as needed and cooperate with other relevant authorities.
DI.P.A.E. stressed that the allegations do not indicate widespread problems and that Cyprus’ universities have gained recognition in Europe and internationally. The agency said it follows European standards in evaluating and accrediting programs and institutions, monitors compliance with recommendations, and ensures that certified institutions maintain quality standards.
The request for an official complaint was made in a letter dated Aug. 25, 2025, following discussions between Phedonos and the DI.P.A.E. Council.
