The Cyprus Police are investigating 57 cases of thefts from beachgoers across various beaches on the island, according to Police Spokesman Christos Andreou. Since the start of the summer, police have made 11 arrests.
Andreou stated that these cases occurred from May 1 to July 22, 2024, with most thefts reported in Larnaca.
Andreou revealed that 43 thefts were recorded in Larnaca, leading to the arrest of eight individuals. One of the suspects attempted to steal twice within the same week.
In Famagusta, six cases are under investigation with two arrests, in Limassol, seven cases with one arrest of a 53-year-old, and in Paphos, one case is being investigated without any arrests.
Andreou noted that the police have taken various measures to apprehend the perpetrators, including conducting special operations with undercover officers on beaches with high theft incidents. In several instances, police caught suspects in the act, while in others, they were alerted by citizens.
Recently, the police have frequently advised the public through social media announcements to avoid bringing valuable items to beaches, carry only necessary cash, not leave belongings unattended, and collaborate with other beachgoers to watch over their possessions.
