Police have recommended criminal prosecution for the 24-year-old driver involved in the deadly traffic accident last July in Aglantzia that claimed the life of 20-year-old Kyriakos Antoniou. The case file is expected to be submitted to the Legal Service in the coming days for a final decision on whether charges will be formally pursued.
Investigators concluded that the driver, traveling well above the 50 km/h speed limit on Larnaca Avenue, collided with Antoniou as he attempted to turn right. Specialized tests from the car’s internal data, often referred to as the “brain” of the vehicle, confirmed the high speed and showed no evidence that the driver attempted to brake before the crash.
As part of the investigation, police reconstructed the scene to assess visibility, reaction time, and vehicle positions. The reconstruction confirmed the distances at which the drivers could see each other and suggested that the collision was unavoidable once the vehicles met at the intersection.
Despite the serious findings, the 24-year-old was not arrested, as authorities determined detention was unnecessary and likely would not have been approved by the courts.
The Legal Service will now review the case and decide whether to formally pursue criminal charges. The accident, which shook the local community, has sparked renewed discussion on road safety and speed enforcement in Cyprus.
