Illegal parking on sidewalks, a daily nuisance across Cyprus, once again sparked anger this week, after a driver in Limassol left her car blocking pedestrian access and got into a heated exchange with a passerby.
According to a post on social media, the confrontation unfolded when a citizen spotted the woman parking on the sidewalk and told her that mothers with strollers or people with mobility difficulties would not be able to get through.
The driver’s response, captured in the post, reflected an attitude all too familiar on the island’s streets: “I come every day and always park there. I’m not disturbing anyone. Go ahead and report me!” she reportedly said.
The incident drew sharp reactions online, with many noting that a supermarket parking lot was just steps away from where the car was illegally parked.
Parking on sidewalks carries a €100 fine in Cyprus, but enforcement remains patchy, leaving citizens frustrated as sidewalks, meant for pedestrians, are routinely blocked by cars.
The latest clash shows what many residents describe as a chronic problem: sidewalks in Cyprus are often treated as overflow parking, at the expense of accessibility and safety.
