A large-scale police operation carried out across Cyprus overnight led to seven arrests, dozens of traffic fines, and hundreds of spot checks as authorities stepped up efforts to curb crime and reassure the public.
Police officers fanned out across key urban areas late Thursday into early Friday, setting up checkpoints and conducting patrols in what officials described as targeted prevention operations.
By morning, seven people had been arrested on a range of charges. The alleged offenses included driving without a license, ignoring a police officer’s signal to stop, traffic violations, illegal employment, and unlawful stay in the Republic.
The numbers give a sense of the scale: officers stopped 234 vehicles and checked 274 drivers and passengers during the night.
Businesses were also part of the sweep. Police carried out 29 inspections of premises to crack down on illegal activity. Three complaints were filed against businesses operating without the necessary licenses.
Traffic enforcement featured heavily in the operation. Police issued 91 citations for road violations, nearly half of them, 47 cases, for speeding. Officers also recorded four traffic-related cases and carried out 91 alcohol tests, which resulted in one report. One vehicle was impounded.
Authorities say the operations are part of an ongoing strategy to prevent serious crime, strengthen public order, and increase the feeling of safety among citizens.
