Shops in Limassol are expected to close early this evening as the city braces for two simultaneous demonstrations, one by the far-right party ELAM and another against fascism. The protests, taking place in close proximity, have led to heightened security measures, with increased police presence throughout the city.
A meeting was held earlier today at the Limassol Police Directorate (LAPD) to discuss the operational plan for the evening's events. The Crisis Handling Centre will oversee the deployment of police forces, including the anti-crime vehicle "Ajax," to monitor the protests.
ELAM's protest, titled "March Against the Criminality of Illegal Immigrants," is set to take place at 7 p.m. in Grigori Afxentios Square, outside the administrative building. Meanwhile, at the same time, a counter-protest against fascism will take place near the city's pier.
In light of the anticipated crowds and security concerns, Limassol's shopping centre representative, Christis Demetriou, told the Cyprus News Agency that the police have advised shops to close earlier than usual. Most businesses are expected to shut their doors by 6:30 p.m. for safety reasons.
The simultaneous protests have raised concerns over potential clashes, prompting authorities to take extra precautions to maintain order and ensure public safety.
