Storms hit Cyprus with heavy rain, hail, and snowfall in Troodos

Authorities issue weather warnings as cold front brings flood risks and hazardous conditions.

A powerful weather system swept across Cyprus on Wednesday, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and even snowfall in the Troodos Mountains. The Meteorological Service issued a yellow warning for severe storms, cautioning residents about the potential for heavy downpours, hail, and dangerous conditions on the roads.

Videos posted online by "CYPRUS LOVERS" captured the dramatic scenes as dark clouds rolled in and rain poured down in various parts of the island. Meanwhile, weather platform "Kitasweather" confirmed that snowfall had begun at the Troodos ski resort, marking one of the first signs of winter in the mountains.

Unstable Weather and Strong Winds

According to meteorologists, a weak low-pressure system combined with cold air is responsible for the unsettled weather. Rain and isolated storms hit the western half of the island early in the day and gradually spread to other regions. Some of these storms were accompanied by hail, while winds reached up to 6 Beaufort along the windward coasts.

Seas were also rough, especially in the west and north, making conditions hazardous for small boats. Temperatures varied across the island, with inland areas reaching 20°C, while the mountains stayed much colder, dropping to 5°C in the highest regions.

More Rain and Snow Expected

The unpredictable weather is expected to continue overnight, with more rain, possible thunderstorms, and snow in the higher mountains. Winds will shift to a northwesterly direction but will remain strong in some areas. By Thursday morning, temperatures will plummet significantly, dipping to -4°C in the higher mountains, where frost will likely form.

Looking ahead, Thursday will remain cold and mostly cloudy, with additional rain and snowfall in the mountains. By Friday and Saturday, conditions will improve, with clear skies over most of the island, though isolated showers may persist in the mountains. Temperatures will begin to gradually rise over the weekend, returning to normal levels for this time of year.

Civil Defense Urges Caution

With heavy rain and storms hitting the island, Civil Defense officials issued safety recommendations to minimize risks and damage.

- Flood Preparedness: Residents in flood-prone areas are urged to install water pumps in basements and move valuable items to higher ground.
- Avoiding Danger: People should stay away from flooded streets and avoid driving through deep water, as vehicles can easily be swept away.
- Workplace Safety: Employers are advised to suspend outdoor work, such as construction, during severe weather to protect workers.

Authorities are reminding the public to remain cautious in flood-risk areas, as changing conditions can make familiar roads and pathways unsafe.

As Cyprus braces for more cold, wet, and windy weather, residents are advised to stay informed, drive carefully, and take precautions to stay safe until conditions improve.
