A 17-year-old boy was arrested in Limassol after a dramatic police chase ended in a crash, authorities said.
The teen was spotted on Wednesday morning driving a car that had been reported stolen just two days earlier, on October 14. A police officer first noticed the vehicle running a red light but was unable to stop it. A short while later, the car was seen again, and when officers signaled the driver to pull over, he sped off, trying to get away.
In his attempt to escape, the 17-year-old allegedly committed multiple traffic violations before crashing into another car and then into the wall of a house, where the vehicle came to a stop. The driver jumped out and tried to flee on foot but was caught moments later by a pursuing officer.
Police said the teenager, a resident of Limassol, was taken into custody for the offenses committed during the chase and was later re-arrested on the basis of an outstanding court warrant connected to a burglary and theft investigation from September 28.
During a search, officers reportedly found a small bag containing about 12 grams of cannabis and a glass pipe with traces of what appeared to be methamphetamine. A preliminary drug test came back positive.
The 17-year-old remains in custody as Limassol CID, together with the Drug Law Enforcement Unit and Traffic Police, continue their investigation.
