French police have made a third arrest in connection with the cinematic-style burglary at the Louvre earlier this month, authorities said late Wednesday.
According to French media, the latest arrest took place in Paris and involves a man suspected of being present during the heist. Two other men were detained earlier this week and have reportedly “partly admitted” to their involvement in the theft, prosecutors said. All three are expected to appear before an investigating judge.
The break-in happened early on October 19, when four masked men forced their way into the museum and escaped with jewelry, revealing serious gaps in the Louvre’s security system.
Investigators say DNA evidence linked one suspect to the getaway scooter and another to a shattered glass display case inside the museum. Police later discovered the vehicle used in the heist had been stolen on October 10.
Paris prosecutors have not ruled out the possibility that the group behind the theft may be larger than the four men seen in surveillance footage.
The Louvre, one of the most visited museums in the world, has since faced scrutiny over how such a high-profile crime could unfold in its heavily guarded halls.
