A 34-year-old Syrian man died Sunday following a motorcycle collision in Limassol, with an autopsy revealing severe head trauma that police suspect may be linked to an improperly secured helmet.
The victim, identified as Mohamed Al Ahmed, was pronounced dead after being transported by ambulance to a private hospital following the midday crash.
The accident occurred around 12:30 p.m. on Sunday when a car driven by a 20-year-old woman reportedly cut off the path of the motorcycle. The car was attempting to merge onto Agios Athanasios Avenue from Kantara Street when the collision took place.
Autopsy cites severe injuries
Forensic pathologist Orthodoxos Orthodoxou conducted the autopsy Monday, concluding that Al Ahmed's death was caused by severe cranio-cerebral trauma and multiple injuries to the body and vital organs.
Limassol Traffic Police confirmed that CCTV footage shows the 34-year-old was wearing a helmet at the time of the impact. However, investigators are now probing the possibility that the helmet was not properly fastened, potentially contributing to the fatal head injuries.
Driver arrested and released
The 20-year-old driver of the car was arrested following the incident. She underwent alcohol and drug testing, both of which returned negative results.
The driver was taken into custody under a court warrant and released later Monday, according to Limassol Traffic Police. Officials stated that she was interrogated and is anticipated to face charges at a later date once police inquiries are complete.
