Will Tesla's next factory be in Turkey?

Erdogan extends invitation to Tesla CEO Musk for factory in Turkey

Newsroom

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has extended an intriguing invitation to Tesla's CEO Elon Musk, proposing the establishment of a Tesla factory in Turkey. This proposition emerged following a meeting at the Turkish House in New York, with Anadolu Agency reporting the development through social media.

Erdogan's proposal coincided with his visit to the United States for the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly. Simultaneously, Elon Musk had his own diplomatic agenda, featuring discussions on artificial intelligence technology with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in California, as relayed through the same online platform.

Tesla's global expansion efforts have been generating considerable interest, including their intent to build a factory in India dedicated to crafting affordable electric vehicles. This aligns with Tesla's broader strategy of international expansion, exemplified by the ongoing construction of a seventh factory in Mexico's northern Nuevo Leon state. Musk had previously outlined plans to finalize the selection of a new factory location by year's end.

Tesla's remarkable stock market performance has been a standout story, with its shares surging by an impressive 123% this year. This accomplishment was further underscored when Tesla proudly announced the production of its 5 millionth vehicle.

Beyond his responsibilities at Tesla, Elon Musk made headlines by acquiring X, formerly known as Twitter, in a groundbreaking transaction valued at a staggering $44 billion in 2022. While Musk often champions free speech, his interactions with the Turkish government have not been without controversy. Specifically, there have been instances where he complied with content censorship requests from Turkish authorities, leading to disputes with Turkish courts on certain occasions.

The convergence of Erdogan's invitation to Elon Musk and Musk's expanding technological endeavors underscores the ever-evolving landscape of global technology and diplomacy. The outcome of this offer remains uncertain, but it highlights the lasting influence of tech visionaries like Musk on the international stage.
