Buzzing with history: Museum in Kato Drys stitches together past and present

Bee and Embroidery Museum in Kato Drys showcases centuries-old crafts and traditions in a vibrant tribute to Cypriot heritage.

Tucked in the mountainous village of Kato Drys, the Bee and Embroidery Museum offers visitors a journey into Cyprus’s rich cultural past, showcasing over 1,000 artifacts in a 300-year-old restored home.

Operating since 2006 and honored in 2014 by the Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Association for its commitment to sustainability, the museum presents five thematic sections across six rooms, covering traditional Cypriot life, including beekeeping, agriculture, livestock, and domestic crafts.

A highlight is the beekeeping section, where visitors explore the biology and social behavior of bees, along with their products and nutritional value. The adjoining 1937 neoclassical home, once owned by embroidery merchant Makis Orthodoxou, features a collection of Lefkaritika embroideries on linen, silk, and cotton, dating back to 1880. The exhibit also includes heirlooms, maps, tools, and documents from Cyprus’s embroidery trade.

The museum is surrounded by gardens and nestled within a village known for its Byzantine roots, stone fountains, and narrow cobbled streets. Its mission, according to the Tsamillis family, descendants of the home’s original owners, is to preserve the “faith, love, patience, and hope” of past generations.

Dedicated to the 1,600 Cypriot volunteers of the 1912 Balkan Wars, the museum holds special tribute to Iosif Tsamillis, a local war volunteer born in the house.
