A social media post by former Cypriot MEP and coroner Marios Matsakis has gone viral in Cyprus, igniting a heated debate over what is shown on television and how far creative freedom should go in mainstream dramas.
Matsakis, who said he does not regularly watch the series, wrote that he happened to come across a scene from the drama “Agios Erotas” (“Holy Love”) airing on Alpha TV. According to his post, the scene showed two women kissing, with one of them pregnant, and also included a reference to a romantic storyline involving two men.
He strongly criticized the broadcast, describing it as “utter depravity” and accusing the channel of promoting what he called “immorality.”
In a highly charged statement, he went further, suggesting that such broadcasts were “dangerous” and part of what he described as a “carefully orchestrated conspiracy” by “immoral circles” using media influence to shape social attitudes, particularly among young people.
Matsakis ended his post by asking followers whether he was right or wrong, a question that quickly fueled thousands of comments, shares, and arguments across social media platforms in Cyprus.
Reactions were sharply divided. Some users agreed with his views, expressing concern over what is shown on television during family viewing hours. Others strongly criticized his remarks, defending the series and saying it simply reflects modern relationships and real-life diversity.
The debate has once again highlighted the cultural divide in Cyprus over LGBTQ+ representation in mainstream media, especially in locally aired dramas that reach wide family audiences.
No public response has yet been issued by the television channel or the production team behind the series.
Translated FB post by Marios Matsakis:
“Utter depravity!
Tonight on Alpha TV, in the series “Agios Erotas” (“Holy Love”), a scene was shown in which two women kissed shortly before one of them gave birth to “their child.”
The shocking part was that the scene also referred to two gay men and their supposedly “beautiful” love story.
I don’t watch this series, so I don’t know whether there have been other similar scenes as well.
Broadcasts like this are dangerous, and channels such as Alpha should not be airing them, because they are trying to persuade young people that homosexuality is entirely normal and acceptable.
All of this is part of a carefully orchestrated conspiracy by certain immoral circles, which are using their influence in the media to promote social and male abnormalities.
Shame on Alpha TV! A great shame!
Am I right to think this way, or am I wrong?”
