Some 43,000 volunteers will help clean up the island on Sunday as part of the “Let’s do it Cyprus!” campaign.

“Let’s do it Cyprus!” began participating in the international campaign in 2012, with about 4,000 volunteers, reaching 35,500 in 2017.

Anyone wishing to join the campaign can submit their participation online at www.letsdoitcyprus.com or by email info@letsdoitcyprus.com.

Commissioner for the Environment Ioanna Panayiotou said “Let’s do it Cyprus!” is part of the “Let’s do it World!” campaign, an international clean up campaign to remove litter from nature.

It is the largest voluntary programme, mobilising citizens, that has ever been organised in the world.

The idea was born in 2008 in Estonia and today over 100 countries take part in “Let’s do it World!”, including Cyprus.

It is the largest voluntary action that takes place in Cyprus.

“Our aim is for the participation of as many volunteers as possible so that our message can reach the whole of Cyprus and be heard loudly throughout the world,” Panayiotou said.

She said the success of the campaign for cleaning up Cyprus in one day depends on volunteerism and the love of the people for the environment.

“The battle to protect the environment is a battle in favour of the future of the Earth, in favour of our future and that of our children, it is a battle for life,” she added.

Commissioner for Volunteerism Yiannis Yiannaki said the message is that the environment and its protection concerns everyone.

“We will see once again that we, Cypriots, unfortunately, pollute the environment. We will also see once again tonnes of rubbish, which all these volunteers will gather, and we will see how we, the people, pollute our environment.”

“We want this society to have environmental awareness, apart from voluntary service, which is truly on the rise,” Yiannaki added.
