Government revising price cap on antiseptics, masks

Local shortages are being observed as international price fluctuations leave importers unable to sell the items at the permitted prices

The government announced on Monday that it was revising the price cap it placed last month on antiseptics and surgical masks, as growing international demand is constantly bringing price fluctuations resulting in local shortages.

According to the Deputy Director of the Ministry of Energy’s Consumer Protection Service, Antonis Ioannou, the wholesale and retail price cap placed on antiseptics, masks, and thermometers through a government decree on March 18 has led several local importers to refrain from procuring these essential items at times when their wholesale price hikes upwards, as they would then be unable to sell them below the price cap.

As a result, shortages are being observed in the Cyprus market, particularly as regards antiseptics and protective masks.

Ioannou said that police have been performing checks to ensure that these items, whose demand surged exponentially with the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, are not priced above the cap, with some violations reported.
