14-year-old arrested in AI image manipulation scandal at Famagusta school

British Bases investigate alleged misuse of AI to create indecent images of students and teachers

The British Bases (BB) in Dhekelia are investigating a serious case at a Famagusta District high school, where male students allegedly used artificial intelligence to manipulate unauthorized photos of female students and teachers, transforming them into indecent images. The modified photos were then reportedly shared in student groups on mobile devices, highlighting the risks posed by powerful digital tools in the hands of young, inexperienced users.

According to reports, the students photographed their classmates and teachers and used AI-based software to alter the images. The disturbing misuse of AI technology has raised significant concerns about privacy and ethical conduct among minors, and authorities are working to address the situation and prevent further misuse.

On Thursday, the BB police took action, arresting a 14-year-old male student from the Larnaca area in connection with the ongoing case. The arrest followed a complaint from the school to BB police, who secured a search warrant to investigate the student’s residence. The boy was detained, expected to give a written statement, and later released on bail to appear in court Friday.

The case has attracted considerable public attention, with many raising alarms over the dangers of AI misuse and the need for stricter guidance and monitoring of emerging technologies in schools. Educators and parents are increasingly concerned about the ethical implications and potential harm AI can pose when used recklessly. Authorities are expected to provide further details as the investigation unfolds, with calls to consider safeguards against similar misuse in the future.
