Cyprus celebrated the launch of its first zero-emissions vessel, EVPLOIA APHRODITE, on Thursday at the Larnaca Marina. At the naming ceremony, Shipping Deputy Minister Marina Hadjimanolis christened the vessel with a ceremonial pour of Commandaria wine, a traditional Cypriot wine, and highlighted the achievement as a milestone in green technology and innovation for Cyprus shipping.
The vessel, designed and built in Cyprus, showcases the country’s capacity for advanced maritime technology, equipped with photovoltaic panels to cover part of its energy needs. Hadjimanolis emphasized the collaborative effort, noting partners such as SignalGeneriX, a company specializing in signal processing, and FP Marine, a shipbuilding consultancy. The vessel, which will serve as a research platform for Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI), aims to support local and international research in sustainable ocean management.
Minister of Agriculture Maria Panayiotou remarked that the vessel represents a shift towards a sustainable future in Cyprus’ maritime sector. With zero-emission technology developed under the A-ZEST program, the ship highlights Cyprus’ commitment to the green transition. Chief Scientist for Research Demetris Skourides echoed these sentiments, adding that the launch exemplifies Cyprus’ potential for research-driven innovation for environmental sustainability.
The event gathered dignitaries, including ambassadors and industry partners, celebrating Cyprus’ leap towards sustainable maritime research.
