The Federation of Environmental Organizations of Cyprus is urging the government to fully enforce protection measures in the Akamas National Forest Park, warning that the landmark region “cannot withstand further concessions or compromises.”
The call comes after the release of a compliance report on Phase A of the park’s road network, which flagged multiple unresolved issues. The federation said several conditions remain unenforced or only partially addressed, while crucial projects, such as hydraulic works in the Avakas gorge, have been postponed for future studies.
Delays in establishing binding rules and protection decrees for the Natura 2000 sites are also raising concern.
The group is demanding the immediate restoration of damage, removal of unnecessary technical works, stronger wildlife safeguards, and priority action on water management in Avakas to preserve species survival. It also wants any infrastructure deemed incompatible with the park’s integrity dismantled, and the long-awaited institutional framework finalized.
“Akamas must be handed down intact to future generations,” the federation said.
