Authorities seek solutions to protect Larnaca Salt Lake

City officials stress preserving the natural habitat for flamingos.

A recent incident involving two vehicles getting stuck at Larnaca’s Aliki Salt Lake highlighted ongoing violations in the area. Pedestrians and motorcyclists frequently trespass, prompting local authorities to explore ways to safeguard the sensitive environment.

“This is one of the most beautiful areas in Cyprus and it must remain in its natural state,” emphasized Larnaca Deputy Mayor Iasonas Iasonidis, adding firmly, “We will not let it be damaged.”

Speaking on the radio program Diaspora News on SPOR FM 95.00, Iasonidis addressed the viral incident, noting that the owner of the stranded vehicles will face fines totaling around €10,000. The breakdown includes €2,000 to the Port Authority, €5,000 to the contractor who removed the vehicles, and just over €2,000 to the municipality for associated costs.

On protecting the area, Iasonidis explained, “It’s our heritage. The problem is that walking or driving here destroys the flamingos’ food supply. Right now, the shrimp are hatching, which is the flamingos’ food. Walking or driving on the lake kills that food. It’s one of Cyprus’ most beautiful regions, and it must stay in its natural form.”

The Municipality of Larnaca, the Port Authority, and the Commissioner for the Environment are studying additional measures to prevent further violations. Deputy Mayor Lambrinos stressed the importance of education, noting that schools should teach children that “Aliki is there to admire, not to disturb.”
