In an effort to provide swift relief to those affected by California's devastating wildfires, President Joe Biden announced one-time payments of $770 for victims. The federal assistance, aimed at addressing urgent needs, will help survivors purchase essentials such as water, baby formula, and medications.
“We’re not waiting until those fires are over to start helping the victims. We’re getting them help right now,” Biden said during a wildfire briefing at the White House on Monday.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) activated its Critical Needs Assistance Program last week, making these payments possible. So far, nearly 6,000 survivors have registered, and $5.1 million in aid has already been distributed, according to the White House.
Biden also shared updates on containment efforts for the fires, noting 14% containment in Pacific Palisades, 33% in Pasadena, and full containment in Ventura.
Last week, the president announced that the federal government would cover 100% of California’s wildfire response costs for 180 days. This extended support ensures that state and local agencies can focus on managing the crisis without the financial strain of firefighting expenses.
While federal aid is being mobilized, tensions between political leaders have emerged. Former President Donald Trump and California Governor Gavin Newsom have exchanged public criticisms over the handling of the wildfires. Trump has called for Newsom’s resignation, while the governor has expressed concern over potential challenges in securing disaster aid once Trump assumes office.
In Congress, Republicans have proposed attaching conditions to California’s wildfire relief funds, a move that has sparked warnings from Democrats, who argue it could set a troubling precedent for future disaster response efforts.
As the fires continue to rage, federal, state, and local officials are racing to support survivors and protect communities. The $770 payments are a critical step in offering immediate relief to those who have lost so much.
