President Joe Biden announced he is withdrawing from the 2024 presidential race but will remain in office for the rest of his term.
As Sky News reports, Biden, who faced mounting pressure from within his own party to abandon his re-election bid, now confronts calls from Republicans demanding his immediate resignation.
Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson and senior Republican Congresswoman Elise Stefanik are among those urging Biden to step down.
"If Joe Biden can't run for re-election, he is unable and unfit to serve as president of the United States," Stefanik said. "He must immediately resign."
Some Republicans have suggested invoking the 25th Amendment to remove Biden from office, though this appears unlikely to succeed. The 25th Amendment allows for the vice president to become acting president if the president is unable to perform the duties of the office. Typically, this is invoked if a president is undergoing a surgical operation and will be unconscious.
Meanwhile, Democrats are deliberating over who should replace Biden on the ticket and the selection process.
Biden’s decision marks a significant shift in the political landscape as both parties gear up for the 2024 election.
