Hollywood star Brad Pitt is expected to arrive on the Greek island of Hydra in late February, turning the picturesque island into a film set for his upcoming movie, The Riders.
The visit has been confirmed by Hydra’s mayor, Giorgos Koukoudakis, who said the production will bring “hundreds of people” to the island, including cast and crew.
“We are particularly happy,” Koukoudakis said, noting that Hydra has a long history with Hollywood. “The very first Hollywood film ever shot in Greece, The Boy and the Dolphin starring Sophia Loren, was filmed here in 1957. It’s no coincidence that Hydra’s unique natural cinematic setting has once again been chosen.”
The Riders, directed by award-winning filmmaker Edward Berger, is set in the 1980s and features Pitt in the lead role. The story follows a father who goes to pick up his daughter from an airport, only to discover that his wife has mysteriously disappeared. Realizing something has gone terribly wrong, he embarks on a search to find her.
The production is the latest in a string of major international film shoots in Greece, which has increasingly attracted big-name filmmakers. Just months ago, Christopher Nolan filmed scenes for his upcoming epic The Odyssey in Messinia, in the southwestern Peloponnese.
With Pitt’s arrival and a full-scale Hollywood crew on the way, Hydra is once again set to enjoy its moment in the cinematic spotlight, this time, nearly seven decades after its first brush with movie history.
