The father and stepmother of two young brothers who were found dead inside a parked car in Xylofagou are due to appear before the Dhekelia British Bases Court on Monday morning, as police continue investigating one of the island's most heartbreaking tragedies.

The boys, aged 8 and 10, were found dead on Sunday after reportedly becoming trapped inside the vehicle for several hours.

Police arrested the children's 30-year-old father and their 38-year-old stepmother as part of the ongoing investigation. During Monday's court hearing, authorities are expected to ask the court to keep the pair in custody while detectives continue gathering evidence.

The case has shocked communities across Cyprus, with many struggling to understand how a summer holiday ended in such devastating loss.

According to Xylofagou Mayor Giorgos Ioulianos, the two brothers had recently arrived from Bulgaria to spend their summer holidays with their father in Cyprus.

Speaking to CyBC's 'Proti Enimerosi' program, the mayor said the father and stepmother reportedly left for work on Sunday morning. At some point afterward, the two children are believed to have left the apartment and entered the family's parked car.

Investigators are examining reports that the boys became locked inside the vehicle and were unable to get out.

The children were later discovered by their stepmother. According to the mayor, the car's windows and doors had to be broken to reach the boys, but it was already too late.

Police have not yet confirmed the exact sequence of events, and investigators are working to establish precisely what happened.

The exact causes of death will be determined through post-mortem examinations and forensic tests, while detectives continue collecting evidence and taking statements.

A heartbreaking reminder

The tragedy has also served as a tragic reminder of how quickly temperatures inside a parked vehicle can become deadly.

Even on days that do not feel exceptionally hot, the temperature inside a closed car can rise rapidly within minutes, creating life-threatening conditions. Children are particularly vulnerable because their bodies heat up much faster than those of adults.

As the investigation continues, many questions remain unanswered, and authorities have urged the public to avoid speculation until the findings of the forensic and police investigations are complete.
