Starting in October, passengers on buses in the Famagusta District will be able to pay for their ride with contactless cards or mobile wallets like Apple Pay. This marks the first time such technology is introduced to Cyprus’ public buses, with 89 vehicles operated by the Famagusta District Transport Organization (OSEA) now equipped with POS machines.
Although all retail and service businesses in Cyprus have been required to accept card payments since 2021, public transport has been exempt, a situation that has discouraged many from using buses.
According to Kathimerini's Doria Yiannakou, this initiative, led by OSEA as a private venture, aims to make buses more appealing and user-friendly, especially for tourists who often rely on them to get around.
While hardware installation is complete, the system still awaits final approval from Visa and Mastercard. Once ready, a pilot phase will begin, with full rollout expected after necessary tests are conducted. The initiative was spearheaded and funded by OSEA as a private effort to modernize services and attract more riders. Fares will remain unchanged, and the system will be integrated with the Ministry of Transport’s telematics software to ensure passengers still get any applicable discounts.
Officials believe this move will not only increase the number of people who will ride a bus but also simplify drivers' work and reduce delays caused by cash transactions and the need for change.
