COVID-19 resurgence alarms Asia as cases soar in Hong Kong, Singapore and beyond

Surging infections prompt booster shot campaigns and strain healthcare systems in major Asian cities.

A fresh wave of COVID-19 is spreading through parts of Asia, including Hong Kong, Singapore, China and Thailand, prompting health authorities to renew warnings as infections and hospitalizations rise.

In Hong Kong, health officials are tracking a surge in severe cases and a spike in the number of positive respiratory samples. The city’s Centre for Health Protection reported 31 serious infections in the week ending May 3, the highest weekly count in a year. Wastewater testing has also shown a significant uptick in viral presence, suggesting wider community transmission.

The resurgence is affecting more than just healthcare systems. Hong Kong pop star Eason Chan recently called off a concert appearance in Taiwan after testing positive for the virus, drawing public attention to the continued risks of infection.

Singapore is also experiencing a sharp rise in cases. The Ministry of Health said approximately 14,200 infections were recorded during the same week, up 28% from the previous week. Hospitalizations increased by nearly one-third.

The government released the figures in an unusual move, signaling growing concern over the trend. Despite the surge, officials said no new variants have been detected. Experts point to declining immunity levels as a key factor, following months without booster vaccinations or large outbreaks.

Singaporean authorities are urging vulnerable groups, particularly seniors and people with chronic conditions, to get booster shots as soon as possible to limit the spread and reduce the risk of severe illness.
