The funeral of former President of the Republic of Cyprus Geoprge Vassiliou is being conducted today with full state honors, financed by the Republic and in accordance with protocol for a sitting head of state.
The coffin bearing Vassiliou’s remains arrived shortly after 11:00 a.m. at the Church of Agia Sophia in Strovolos. He passed away earlier this week at the age of 94.
A ceremonial procession accompanied the arrival, with the Police Philharmonic Band performing funeral marches and a military honor guard rendering official honors. The National Anthem was played upon the coffin’s entrance to the church.
Draped in the flag of the Republic of Cyprus, the coffin was carried by eight members of the military police and escorted by officers. Family members followed, including his wife, former European Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou, who was visibly emotional. The coffin was then placed inside the church.
Prior to the start of the service, the family received condolences from officials and members of the public. The funeral service began at 1:00 p.m. and attended by President Nikos Christodoulides, the full Cabinet, and other dignitaries. Greece is represented by Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis, while Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman is also present.
