Rising admissions push public hospitals to the limit as flu season claims its first victim among high-risk groups.

Public hospitals in Cyprus are running at 85 to 90% capacity, a figure expected to climb further as the winter flu season continues, health officials said.

Charalambos Charilaou, press spokesman for the Organization of Cyprus Public Hospitals (OKYpY), told the TV show Apo Mera Se Mera that the high occupancy is not unusual for this time of year, but recent weeks have seen a notable increase in patients.

He explained that part of the surge comes from higher attendance at emergency and specialist services, as many personal and specialist doctors have been on leave. Additionally, admissions of patients with the “Alpha” flu have risen, though hospital operations have not been disrupted.

Charilaou also confirmed that a recent death occurred in a patient from a vulnerable group who had contracted influenza, highlighting the ongoing risks the virus poses to the elderly and immunocompromised.

Health officials are urging residents, especially those in high-risk groups, to take precautions as hospitals handle heavy patient loads and the flu season continues.
