Cyprus is intensifying efforts to tackle diabetes through stronger prevention, earlier diagnosis and improved patient care, Health Minister Neophytos Charalambides said over the weekend, describing the condition as a growing public health challenge both locally and worldwide.

In remarks delivered at the 10th Pancyprian Diabetes Congress and released Sunday, the minister stressed the need for a comprehensive, coordinated response to the disease. He said the government’s updated National Diabetes Strategy focuses on expanding prevention initiatives and screening programs while enhancing the monitoring and management of people living with diabetes.

Charalambides added that the plan also prioritizes ongoing training and support for healthcare professionals, alongside encouraging patients to take a more active role in managing their condition.

According to the minister, the revised strategy reflects the latest scientific evidence as well as the practical needs of the population. He underscored that modern public health pressures require policies grounded in research and implemented across multiple levels of care, with particular emphasis on prevention, early detection, high-quality continuous treatment and stronger patient self-management.

The health minister also pointed to recent technological advances, including continuous glucose monitoring devices and insulin pumps, especially for children, noting that such tools are making diabetes easier to manage and are helping improve patients’ quality of life.
