Authorities decided to remove 130 speed-reducing installations, such as bumps and elevated platforms, Senior Executive Engineer at the Department of Public Works (DPW), Charalambos Kais, told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA).

According to Kais some of these installations have already been removed, while others are scheduled for removal in 2025. Several will be taken out during ongoing projects, and a further number of bumps will be removed as part of future road rehabilitation plans.

When asked about the progress of removing speed bumps from roads, Kais says that the issue has been discussed in 14 sessions of the Technical Committee of the Central Body for Traffic Problem Resolution since April 2023. He added that the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Works continues its efforts, through the DPW, to reassess measures implemented on Cyprus’ road network.

As part of this initiative, Kais noted that in mid-2023, following instructions from the Ministry, the DPW sent letters to all municipalities, the Union of Communities, District Administrations, and District Offices of the DPW. These letters requested suggestions for speed bump removals. Additionally, authorities were asked to review all implemented traffic measures to identify areas that do not meet DPW standards. The Ministry made relevant announcements aimed at both authorities and the general public, he added.

When asked about the challenges faced in promoting the removal policy, Kais cited slow response times from the responsible authorities as one of the key obstacles. Another challenge, he said, stems from the fact that many of the bumps will be removed as part of broader urban road construction and improvement projects, which involve lengthy processes.

Kais also pointed out the lack of anticipated response from local authorities and citizens in submitting requests for the removal or reassessment of speed bumps. Despite ongoing efforts by the DPW, he said that public and local authority engagement was crucial to implementing the policy successfully.
