Officials to remove 2,500 speed bumps across the island

Safety measures outside schools will remain intact; 13 of 113 approved speed bumps already removed

Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades announced that 13 speed bumps have been removed out of the 113 that were approved for removal by the relevant committee. Speaking on the RIK radio show "Morning Route," Vafeades emphasized that the committee continuously reviews requests for the removal of speed bumps, and so far, it has approved the removal of 113 bumps.

Vafeades added that in his recent meetings with mayors, he prioritizes the issue of speed bump removal because the municipalities need to be actively involved in the process. He clarified that speed bumps are the responsibility of municipalities and communities, not the Ministry of Transport, although the Ministry does fund their removal. However, due to tight deadlines faced by provincial engineers in Public Works, only 13 of the 113 approved bumps have been removed so far, but the process is ongoing.

It should be noted that when asked by the newspaper "Kathimerini" whether cameras would replace the removed speed bumps, Vafeades stated that cameras are not the first choice but rather the last resort. The goal is to implement passive measures that naturally encourage drivers to reduce speed, such as installing "cushions"—square-shaped bumps that allow vehicles to pass on either side but require drivers to slow down to do so. Additionally, other measures like traffic islands are available in the Public Works toolbox.

It's worth noting that a total of 2,500 speed bumps will be removed across the Republic of Cyprus, with the only remaining bumps being those located outside schools for safety reasons.
