The Minister of Defense, Vasilis Palmas, confirmed reports regarding the construction of a naval base in Mari, during an interview on SPOR FM 95’s "Diaspora News."

Minister Palmas highlighted Cyprus's recent geopolitical advancements, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict in Gaza. He stressed the importance of developing appropriate infrastructure to leverage these advancements effectively.

"To offer services when and if necessary to friendly countries, we need to demonstrate our geopolitical upgrade with practical results," said Palmas. He emphasized the prioritization of the naval base project, which has garnered support from Greece.

Greece is currently providing technical assistance to the Republic of Cyprus for this initiative. Palmas mentioned that they are awaiting the preliminary study that will outline the process for constructing the base. "This is a medium-term and long-term project," he noted, stressing that it will be undertaken carefully to ensure the Republic can meet its international obligations.

Palmas clarified that the construction of the naval base will not happen overnight but will proceed methodically to ensure quality and sustainability. The project aims to enhance Cyprus’s ability to contribute to regional security and support allied nations.

Yesterday, both the Defense Ministers of the Cyprus and Greece reaffirmed their shared commitment to maintaining security in the Southern Mediterranean, underscoring the collaborative efforts in the region.
