Did it escape or was it stolen? Investigation continues into dismembered kangaroo

Police probe how a kangaroo ended up butchered in an apartment parking lot, while suspicions grow over illegal animal sourcing and treatment.

A disturbing case in Deryneia involving the dismemberment of a kangaroo has horrified the public and prompted a deeper police investigation into how the animal ended up in the hands of two men and whether it was stolen, purchased, or already dead.

Police were called to the scene after a tip-off on Wednesday, where they found a 36-year-old man from Cameroon in a parking lot with plastic bags full of butchered animal parts, an axe, and five knives. A second man fled the scene before officers arrived. The man who was arrested was taken to the Deryneia Police Station, where authorities discovered he had been staying in Cyprus illegally after his asylum request was rejected in 2022.

When questioned, the man claimed the animal was a kangaroo and said he got it from another person in Paralimni. Veterinary Services later confirmed the remains belonged to an adult kangaroo, which has now been sent for further testing.

The most likely theory, according to police sources, is that the animal was being prepared for food. Authorities are now investigating how the kangaroo ended up in their possession, whether it was already dead, killed on the spot, purchased, or stolen. Police are focusing particularly on a private farm in the area known to have a kangaroo, checking if the animal was illegally taken from there.

The case has left many questioning how such an incident could happen in Cyprus and whether enough oversight exists regarding exotic animals on private property. Investigations by Deryneia Police are ongoing.
