A 56-year-old man was arrested late Tuesday night in Limassol after allegedly driving drunk and crashing into a series of parked vehicles, in an incident police say could easily have ended far worse.
The collision happened shortly after 10 p.m. on a Limassol road, when the driver, under circumstances still being investigated, struck a parked car but continued driving instead of stopping.
Police said the vehicle then crashed into three additional parked cars, causing extensive material damage along the street. During the final impact, one of the parked vehicles was pushed forward and hit another nearby car before the driver’s vehicle finally came to a halt.
Limassol Traffic Police officers arrived at the scene and found the 56-year-old still inside his car.
A preliminary breathalyzer test recorded 112 micrograms of alcohol, more than five times Cyprus’ legal limit of 22 micrograms, authorities said.
The driver was taken to Limassol Traffic Police headquarters for a final breath test but failed to provide an adequate sample and was arrested. He remains in custody while investigations continue.
The incident adds to ongoing concerns over drink-driving in Cyprus, where police repeatedly warn that alcohol remains a leading factor in serious road collisions. Authorities are urging drivers to make responsible choices, stressing that incidents involving parked cars can just as easily involve pedestrians or passing motorists.
