Driving under the influence in Cyprus: 4 years in jail

Cyprus raises speeding fines up to €5 per km over limit

Newsroom

Speeding remains one of the most common traffic violations in Cyprus, but the penalties have become significantly harsher following new legislation.

On October 1, 2020, the Cypriot House of Representatives enacted laws increasing penalties for specific traffic offenses, particularly those contributing to fatal and serious road accidents. Under these new provisions, violators face up to four years in prison or a fine of up to €15,000, or both, for exceeding speed limits while driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Repeat offenders face even steeper penalties. If convicted of combined offenses within three years, penalties double, and the offender's driving license may be suspended for at least two months.

Fines for speeding have also increased. Traffic tickets now range from €2 to €5 per kilometer over the speed limit, up from the previous €1 to €3 range, depending on the severity of the offense.

The judiciary now holds the authority to impose stricter penalties, including fines up to €4,000 (previously €1,000), license suspensions of up to three months, imprisonment of up to one year, and penalty points ranging from four to eight. In cases of repeat offenses within three years, the court may suspend the offender's driving license for at least two months.

These measures reflect Cyprus's ongoing efforts to enhance road safety and reduce traffic-related fatalities.
