Intensive care units strained as heatstroke cases surge in Nicosia

66-year-old woman intubated, 78-year-old admitted as heatstroke cases rise

Three people are currently being treated at the Nicosia General Hospital with heatstroke, Charalampos Charilaou, spokesperson of the State Health Services Organisation told CNA, adding that two of them are in the intensive care unit in a serious condition.

"A 34-year-old was extubated but remains in the intensive care unit. Yesterday a 66-year-old woman was intubated and is in the intensive care unit, while a 78-year-old woman with heatstroke is being treated in a ward," he said.

A 25-year-old who was hospitalised with heatstroke has been discharged.

Charilaou said that every day there are cases of heat exhaustion at the Emergency Departments of public hospitals, adding that they receive the proper medical treatment and are discharged.
