Electricity trade in E. Med could spark net zero emissions in region

Groundbreaking study reveals electricity trade's key role in tackling emissions

Newsroom / CNA

Recent research conducted by the Cyprus Institute (CyI) has highlighted the significant role electricity trade can play in achieving cost-optimal greenhouse gas emission abatement targets. According to the study, such trade could even lead to the entire Eastern Mediterranean & Middle East (EMME) region achieving net zero carbon emissions by the mid-21st century.

In its press release, CyI emphasizes its commitment to analyzing energy and climate policies in the EMME region. Their aim is to aid policymakers in understanding the challenges associated with decarbonization and provide valuable insights.

The researchers' efforts have resulted in two scientific publications in prestigious international journals. One of these publications, in collaboration with Steven Griffiths of Khalifa University of Science and Technology, focused on how to fairly distribute greenhouse gas emission reductions across EMME countries to align with the Paris Agreement. They explored fourteen different approaches based on equity principles defined by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change to determine equitable national emission allocations for 2030, ultimately leading to net zero carbon emissions in 2050 or 2070.

Given the diversity among EMME countries, allocating targets in a manner that is both fair and politically acceptable poses considerable challenges.

Additionally, the researchers developed the first fully open-source energy systems model for the EMME region, using publicly available data. This model is accessible to other researchers in the region or beyond, enabling more detailed analyses at regional or national levels. The scenarios implemented with this model revealed that increased electricity interconnections between EMME countries could unlock the vast renewable energy potential in the region, offering substantial benefits.

The press release reiterates that the electricity trade has the potential to significantly contribute to achieving greenhouse gas emission abatement targets. It also emphasizes the environmental and socio-economic benefits resulting from cooperation among EMME countries.

CyI continues to collaborate with knowledge institutions in the region, aiming to improve prosperity through science, technology, and innovation.
