European Medicines Agency sets up vaccine advisory group to tackle hesitancy

New panel of specialists to address vaccine hesitancy and guide public communication.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has created a new expert advisory group focused on vaccines and vaccination practices, aiming to address public hesitation and strengthen trust in immunization.

According to the agency, the panel includes more than 20 specialists from across Europe and beyond, bringing together expertise from academia, healthcare professions, medical associations, patient groups, and public health institutions. The group held its first meeting on April 29 and will meet every three months.

The EMA describes vaccine hesitancy as an increasing global risk to public health. When confidence in vaccines declines, diseases that were once controlled can return, putting populations at risk.

One of the agency’s key responsibilities is to provide clear, evidence-based information. By explaining how vaccines are evaluated and approved, the EMA aims to support people in making informed choices grounded in science and transparency.

The newly formed group is intended to support these efforts by offering advice on current initiatives to improve public confidence in vaccines. It will also contribute to analyses of trends related to vaccine hesitancy and recommend ways to improve communication about both the benefits and potential risks of vaccines.

Through this initiative, the EMA seeks to strengthen public understanding, rebuild trust, and enhance the effectiveness of its public health messaging.
