Parliamentary candidate arrested after alleged assault at football match

Assistant referee struck by bottle and reportedly attacked on the field.

A violent incident disrupted a local football match in Cyprus late Saturday, leading to the arrest of a 38-year-old man who is reportedly a candidate in the upcoming parliamentary elections.

The incident occurred during a game between Rotsidis Mammari and APOP Perekklisia, part of the STOK integration championship. Near the end of the match, a plastic bottle was thrown from the stands, striking the assistant referee. Shortly after, another individual entered the field and allegedly attacked the official, punching him.

The match was stopped following the incident. The assistant referee was taken to Larnaca General Hospital, where he underwent medical examinations and was later discharged.

Police said they have identified a 38-year-old man from Limassol as a suspect in the alleged assault. He was arrested under a court warrant and remains in custody. Authorities are expected to bring him before the Larnaca District Court to seek a detention order.

According to available information, the suspect is a parliamentary candidate in the upcoming elections and had previously taken part in protests involving livestock farmers.

The Kofinou Regional Police Station is continuing its investigation.
