Cyprus is still rattled by an intense run of earthquakes that began early Wednesday near Agia Marina Kelokedara, with experts confirming more than 200 tremors in just two days, including two strong quakes felt across the island.
According to the Geological Survey Department, the activity started Wednesday morning about 20 kilometers northeast of Paphos. Within the first five hours, two powerful earthquakes, measuring 5.2 and 5.3, shook Cyprus from Paphos to Nicosia and were even felt along parts of the eastern Mediterranean coast.
Since then, the ground has barely stayed still. Over 200 quakes have been recorded in the same area, dozens strong enough for people to feel, and at least 16 ranging between magnitude 3 and 4.5.
Seismologists say the swarm has been gradually calming over the last 42 hours, with both the size and frequency of tremors slowly declining. Still, they caution that while the risk of another large quake is dropping, it cannot be ruled out entirely.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation around the clock.
