Financial strain and governance concerns top citizens’ worries in Cyprus

59% of respondents struggle, or fail, to meet their financial obligations.

Newsroom

Only 24% of citizens are very or fairly satisfied with how things are going in Cyprus, while 76% are little or not at all satisfied. Two factors help explain this: first, 59% of respondents say they manage with difficulty—or not at all—to meet their financial obligations. Second, the top concerns for citizens are the economy and rising costs (66%), corruption and scandals (43%), and the Cyprus issue (34%). Immigration follows at 19%, down from 27% last year. This survey was conducted by Stratego - IMR, following the same questionnaire methodology as previous national surveys.

Public perception of the government
Only 29% are very or fairly satisfied with the government’s performance, while 70% are little or not at all satisfied. Satisfaction is slightly higher than it was in February 2024. The government scores higher approval on foreign policy and Cyprus’s international image (44% satisfaction), while handling the cost of living, particularly housing, is seen as the government’s major weakness (14% satisfaction).

Support for Western alignment and investment
62% of Cypriots support deeper relations with the U.S. and military cooperation with NATO countries, indicating broad support for a Western-oriented foreign policy. 66% agree with foreign investments in Cyprus but call for limits and regulations. On energy, costs, and power cuts, responsibility is seen as shared equally among the Electricity Authority, the current government, and the previous government.
