Nicosia has reached a key stage in the redevelopment of the Pedieos River/Kanlıdere corridor, with the first phase of a European Union-funded rehabilitation project now finished.
The initiative, implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) through the EU Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot community, is designed to improve the river environment, expand public green areas and create spaces that can be enjoyed by residents from across the city.
To mark the completion of the opening phase, representatives of both communities, EU and UNDP officials, local residents, cyclists and community organisations took part in walking and cycling activities along the newly completed section.
The completed stretch covers 1.2 kilometres and links the Ledra Palace crossing area with the Pedieos River/Kanlıdere corridor. New infrastructure includes a two-way cycle lane, pedestrian walkway and landscaped green zone intended to improve safety, accessibility and access to nature within the capital.

The project seeks to encourage environmentally friendly transport, support habitat restoration and provide opportunities for greater interaction between communities through shared recreational areas.
When fully developed, the scheme is expected to attract at least 250,000 visitors each year. It forms part of plans to create a 3.7-kilometre linear park extending along the river corridor, with additional green spaces and upgraded public amenities.
Work on the second phase is scheduled to begin in September 2026. The next stage will continue the development of a continuous route for pedestrians and cyclists while supporting recreation, environmental conservation and connections between different parts of Nicosia.
The EU Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot community operates under Council Regulation 389/2006 and is intended to support Cyprus reunification efforts through economic development, stronger links between the island’s communities and closer engagement with the European Union. UNDP’s work in Cyprus focuses on confidence-building measures and cooperation between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.
