Former Greek royals ask to be recognized as citizens

Paul and his family seek official Greek citizenship, agreeing to respect the republic and drop royal titles.

Members of the former Greek royal family are set to request the official recognition of their Greek citizenship on Thursday.

Paul, the son of Greece’s former king, Constantine Glucksberg, will submit the application on behalf of himself and several family members, including his brother Nicholas and five children.

They plan to request that their citizenship be registered, using a two-word French surname, “de Grece,” meaning “of the Greeks,” as per their legal representatives.

The Ministry of the Interior stated that the process involves recording their citizenship in municipal registers, not granting new nationality. The application will be processed at the Athens Registry Office.

Greek law, which outlines the steps for the Glucksberg family’s recognition of citizenship, requires a formal declaration of respect for the Greek Constitution, the republic’s form of government, and the results of the 1974 referendum.

The family must also renounce any past claims to royal titles.

Upon approval, their registration will be completed, granting full rights and obligations of Greek citizens.

The request is expected to be accepted with no objections from the Interior Ministry, and the family members can choose their place of registration outside Athens if desired.
