The Ministry of Agriculture has defended its handling of the Pentakomo Integrated Waste Management Facility (OEDA), saying work is progressing according to a defined plan following criticism from AKEL.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Ministry said preparations for the site's long-term improvement are already underway and confirmed that a new operator is expected to take over the facility during 2027.

According to the Ministry, the incoming contractor will be responsible for carrying out infrastructure works aimed at modernising the plant and improving its overall performance.

Officials said the current administration had been open about the condition of the facility when it took office, adding that it first restored operations before beginning preparations for the next phase of the project.

The Ministry also said its approach is based on technical expertise, careful planning and advice from specialist organisations, including JASPERS, the European Commission's advisory programme for major infrastructure projects.

Responding to criticism over the pace of progress, the Ministry said complex infrastructure projects require detailed planning and cannot be completed immediately. It added that effective waste management depends on specialist knowledge, comprehensive assessment and sustainable long-term solutions.

The statement concludes by saying the Government remains committed to delivering the project according to its planned timetable, with environmental protection, public health and the public interest guiding its decisions.
